On Wednesday the 16th of March Menna Owen-Strong arranged for a lecture to be delivered through the medium of the Welsh language at the Capel Newydd Vestry, Llandeilo.

Members were fortunate to be addressed by Mererid Hopwood, who is very well known in academic circles and the subject of her lecture was “Poems in Carmarthenshire” or “Cerddi Caerfyrddin”. The Speaker was introduced by long standing member and one of the Vice Presidents of the Antiquarian Society, Arfon Rees.

Mererid Hopwood delivered a very learned lecture on poetry intermingled with history relating to Wales and in particular to Carmarthenshire. Notable figures in this field were Elfed and William Williams Pantycelyn.

At the conclusion of the lecture, which many present described as a “Masterclass in the poetry of Carmarthenshire”, a lively question and answer session followed.

The Speaker was thanked by Arfon Rees who also added his thanks to Menna Owen-Strong for making the meticulous arrangements for the evening and to Lynwen for her superb skill in operating the simultaneous translation facilities.
