Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm writing to let you know about a course coming up here at the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) that I hope might be of interest to you and other members of Carmarthenshire Antiquarian Society.

“The castles of the East Midlands and East Anglia” is a weekend course taking place here in September.

The castles of the East Midlands and East Anglia
In this fully illustrated course, we will trace the evolution, development and decline of the castle through prominent examples in our own immediate hinterland. We are fortunate that this will enable an examination of some of the most important structures traditionally seen as hallmarks in the history of the castle.

The tutor: Dr James Petre
James Petre obtained his BA and MA in history and his PhD in archaeology. His area of interest lies primarily in the medieval period. In 2012 his PhD was developed into a book, Crusader Castles of Cyprus , published by the Cyprus government. Simultaneously he had another book published, The Castles of Bedfordshire , which partly underpins this course. He has taught various audiences; his style is to provoke review over received opinion and investigate matters hitherto overlooked. He also continues his own new studies and is currently a postgraduate student of the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Additional details
The course will take place at the home of ICE, Madingley Hall. A beautiful 16 th century country house set in seven acres of gardens landscaped by “Capability” Brown, Madingley Hall attracts thousands of students each year. Accommodation is available in one of the Hall's 62 en suite bedrooms, and meals from its award-winning kitchen are included in the fee. The course will run from 12 to 14 September, beginning with dinner on the Friday and ending after lunch on the Sunday. The fee for the course is £250 and accommodation is available at Madingley Hall if desired. For full details visit: www.ice.cam.ac.uk/castles
